October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and the Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library is celebrating with a new Storywalk story and a special way to help local animals in need.
Our newest Storywalk features Odd Dog, a heartwarming story about adoption, acceptance and finding a place to call home. The story is a perfect reminder of the difference a loving family can make in the life of a shelter pet. The new Storywalk story was made possible through the generous support of the Sunshine Circle of Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church in Woodland. We are grateful for their support in helping us bring another wonderful story to our community. In honor of Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, the library will also be collecting donations for the Clearfield County SPCA throughout October. Items on the SPCA's wish list include:
Stop by the StoryWalk to enjoy Odd Dog, then consider bringing a donation to the library to help our furry friends at the Clearfield County SPCA. And if you've been thinking about adding a new member to your family, October is a wonderful time to see the dogs, cats and other animals waiting for their own place to call home. Together, we can make a difference for animals in our community, one story, one donation and one adoption at a time.

A new season means plenty of new reasons to stop by Shaw Library!
Our fall programs return the week of September 21, bringing opportunities for little learners, growing readers, adults and families to read, create, connect and have a little fun along the way. From story times and children’s activities to book clubs, special programs and more, there’s always something happening at the library. Whether you’re a familiar face or looking for a new way to get involved, we’d love to have you join us. Program days and times vary, so be sure to check out our Events Calendar for the latest schedule and all the details. Find something that sounds fun, mark your calendar and we’ll see you at the library! Dinosaurs, mysteries, history, adventures and plenty of good books made their way through Shaw Library this summer. Our 2026 Summer Reading Program, Unearth a Story, invited readers of all ages to read, explore and discover from June 15 through August 14. And when we say all ages, we mean it. Programming stretched from our tiniest readers all the way through teens and adults, with story times, crafts, games, challenges, special events and plenty of opportunities to earn prizes along the way. Summer Reading may officially be over, but fortunately books have absolutely no respect for seasons. There are still plenty of new stories waiting on the shelves. Thank you to everyone who spent part of their summer reading, creating and exploring with us. We hope you found at least one new favorite book along the way. Books aren't the only way to make a little noise at the library.
The Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library has received a $1,500 grant from the Clearfield County Charitable Foundation to support the creation of a new Musical Garden. The grant was awarded as part of the Foundation's 2025 Community Grant Program, which provided funding to organizations and projects throughout Clearfield County. The Musical Garden will give Shaw Library another opportunity to encourage creativity, discovery and play beyond the pages of a book. It's also one more way we're continuing to imagine what a library can be for the families and community we serve. Because sometimes learning sounds like turning a page. And sometimes it sounds like making a little music. Stay tuned as the Musical Garden begins to take shape!
